Ik heb het even getest en had er zelf geen problemen mee.
Wat ik mij wel herinner is dat dit ook door de beveiliging van hun kan komen.
Word documenten kunnen virussen bevatten en om te voorkomen dat ze dan meteen het bestand openen
veranderd de extentie. Volgens mij gewoon hernoemen naar .doc en je kunt het weer openen.

If Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format is selected, then the recipient's server may have trouble decoding the format, and will thus convert the mail to DAT format.
Try going to Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
In the Send in this message format list, select Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK.
HTML will retain all WORD doc formatting.
Plain text is just that...similar to what you see in Notepad.
